COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local firefighters will visit classrooms during Fire Prevention Week — Oct. 5-11 — to teach students fire safety, and families are urged to test detectors and review home escape plans.  The Bargain Hunter

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Homestead Furniture & Interiors will host its annual Apple Crisp Sale from Oct. 6 to Oct. 11 at its Mt. Hope showroom with extended hours on some days. Discounts will be offered on hardwood furniture, upholstery, outdoor furniture, mattresses and accessories + customers may enter a giveaway for gift cards of $1,000, $750 or $500 + free Amish-made apple crisp with ice cream will be served to thank customers.  The Daily Record
  • Variety Wholesalers purchased Big Lots’ intellectual property and reopened over two dozen Ohio stores—each store will hold a grand opening event at 9 a.m. Oct. 30 with a kickoff sale running through Oct. 5 that offers a 10% discount. The chain finished reopening in June after its bankruptcy last year and will add more furniture, apparel, and decor for the holiday season.  The Daily Record

CULTURE NEWS

  • Wayne Center for the Arts broke ground on its new Arts Park and FabLab on Sept. 30 in downtown Wooster—an initiative that will provide green space, public art and a state-of-the-art workshop for creative learning. The project was supported by a grant from the state department and is being built in partnership with local firm Bogner Construction.  The Daily Record

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nearly 100 Wayne County FFA members participated in the annual Soil Judging Career Development Event at Wayne County Schools Career Center—testing soil texture, color and drainage for farming and land development. Top teams now will advance to the state contest with support from local soil conservation experts and Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute.  The Daily Record

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ohio launched a pilot program under House Bill 96 on July 1 to give law enforcement, fire departments and EMS drones for search, crash response and disaster recovery; applications will open in November and the program will fund systems purchases, operator training and federal approvals (state officials said).  The Bargain Hunter
  • County offices in Wayne and Holmes have recently processed marriage licenses and dissolutions for local couples, including residents from Wooster, Apple Creek and nearby communities—records show names, addresses and marriage years. The documents include both recent unions and past marriages.  The Daily Record

SPORTS NEWS

  • Ohio high school football is in Week 7 and fans in Wayne and Holmes counties followed Friday night games — with matchups featuring Lexington at West Holmes and Dover at Wooster, among others.  The Daily Record
