Good morning, Wooster. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 9th of August.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ohio residents will see the Perseid meteor shower peak on August 12–13—though a waning gibbous moon will reduce visible activity to about 10–20 bright meteors per hour instead of the usual 50–100. Local observers are advised to head to dark sky parks like Geauga Observatory Park or Fry Family Park and watch the display after midnight.  The Daily Record
  • Makayla Meek (a local participant) showed her heifer Matilda at the Holmes County Fair and described the fun she had with her dairy cow project. Her remarks gave a clear glimpse into the work and enjoyment of showing cattle (a long-standing fair tradition).  The Daily Record

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The College of Wooster is hosting a fall series on academic freedom and democracy at Gault Recital Hall—open to the public—and will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 3 with a talk by professor Eve Darian-Smith; additional events are scheduled for Sept. 17 and Oct. 15.  The Daily Record

HEALTH NEWS

  • Columnist Bobbie Randall gives advice on healthy eating for those coping with grief by suggesting small, balanced meals and regular hydration. She recommends including fruits, vegetables and lean protein on a daily basis—while cutting back on fried foods, caffeine and alcohol—to help manage energy and mood.  The Bargain Hunter
  • Pomerene Hospital partnered with board-certified sleep specialist Dr. Butros Latouf — an expert in sleep disorders — to launch its new sleep clinic. The clinic offers in-lab and at-home sleep studies and telehealth visits to diagnose and treat conditions such as sleep apnea, insomnia and restless leg syndrome.  The Bargain Hunter
  • Since January 1, Ohio reported 326 cases of Legionellosis with 298 hospitalizations from Legionnaires’ disease — the bacteria grows in warm water environments such as air conditioning systems and hot tubs and poses greater risks for older adults, smokers and those with weakened immune systems.  The Daily Record
