GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ohio lawmakers passed a bill to raise fines for drivers who pass stopped school buses after a fatal crash in 2023. The law lets schools add cameras and use $10 million in lottery funds for safety upgrades—and it designates August as School Bus Safety Month while the measure now moves to the Senate.  The Daily Record
  • The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles warned drivers that scammers are sending fake texts demanding immediate payment for nonexistent traffic tickets (the texts threaten license suspension and include suspicious links) and advised recipients to delete the messages and report them to local law enforcement.  The Daily Record
  • Steven Toole, a former North Carolina state pension director & Ohio State grad, was chosen as the new executive director of the State Teachers Retirement System to manage $96 billion for about 500,000 teachers and retirees. He will begin on July 14 after 20 months of temporary leadership during recent controversies.  The Daily Record

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Ohio will offer free fishing days on June 14 and 15 — letting residents aged 16 and older fish in public waters without a license — while all other fishing rules stay in effect. The state also will supply tools like the HuntFish OH app to help anglers find good fishing spots.  The Daily Record

  • Smithville’s Kaitlyn Carr won the 1,600 in 4:49.44 and the 3,200 in 10:48.87 at the Division III state tournament held at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus — she also anchored her team's sixth-place finish in the 4x800 relay.  The Bargain Hunter
