COMMUNITY NEWS

  • In May, the Wayne County Community Foundation Board approved spring competitive grants awarding nineteen local organizations $404,685.45 for projects such as safety upgrades and facility repairs—supporting a range of community needs.  The Bargain Hunter
  • In May, the Wayne County Community Foundation board approved GIVE 365 grants awarding $26,500 to five nonprofits that support local food programs, telehealth mental health services and youth mentorship, including a grant to the Boys + Girls Club for its Healthy for Me program. A new membership cycle starts July 1 for residents who want to support local nonprofits.  The Daily Record

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Smoke from over 203 Canadian wildfires spread across several U.S. states yesterday, including Ohio, where the air was deemed unhealthy for sensitive groups — officials advised those at risk to limit outdoor exertion.  The Daily Record

SPORTS NEWS

  • Mike Schmitz, the former head coach of College of Wooster's football team who led them to a 78-54 record, died Sunday, June 1 at age 72. He coached for 18 seasons—guiding the team to its first NCAA Division III Championship appearance.  The Bargain Hunter
  • West Holmes seniors Alex Pringle and Sami Latouf switched from singles to doubles to win sectionals and district matches and earned a state tournament appearance. They lost to CVCA in the opening round—showing that a last-minute coaching change helped spark an unexpected run.  The Bargain Hunter
