COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On April 11, over 40 infants and toddlers participated in an Easter egg hunt hosted by Wayne County Board of Developmental Disabilities’ Early Intervention Program, sponsored by Oak Chapel United Methodist Church. The event featured more than 600 plastic eggs filled with candy—an occasion that included a visit from the Easter Bunny and therapy dogs.  The Daily Record

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wayne County Stitchers donated 48 blankets in March to Forget me Not Blankets for Baskets and will host a Learn & Sew program on April 26 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for youth ages 9-12 to make a burrito pillow case and zipper pouch—six reservations are confirmed. The club is also planning a Sewing Fest on Oct. 4 and is developing a cookbook on soups, salads and sandwiches.  The Daily Record
  • Waynedale High School sophomore Cameron Rabatin was selected to sing with the National Honor Choir in Dallas in March and was the only Ohio student chosen for the Tenor-Bass group among 300 students—he performed at the Meyerson Symphony Center with his choir director Daniel Mylott and his father as chaperones. Rabatin said the experience gave him valuable knowledge that will guide him in teaching musical theater in the future.  The Daily Record

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Scientists say periodical cicadas from Brood XIV will emerge in central Ohio in the first week of May when the soil warms to 64 degrees+ experts expect billions to appear as the insects follow their 17-year cycle and show up in other eastern states at different times this spring.  The Daily Record
  • A pair of solar eruptions will hit Earth today and may bring the northern lights into northern Ohio—if the geomagnetic storm holds at a moderate level, the aurora could be seen as far south as Lake Erie.  The Daily Record
  • Starting tomorrow, April 17, the Lyrid meteor shower will brighten Ohio skies until April 26 with its peak on the night of April 21 into April 22—viewers may see up to 100 meteors per hour and occasional bright fireballs if weather holds. Forecasts show partly cloudy skies and possible rain during the peak, which could affect viewing in some areas.  The Daily Record
