ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tate Emerson discussed plans to turn land near Killbuck into trails and sites for outdoor activities. The project will use wetlands to boost local recreation in the coming months.  The Daily Record
  • Hummingbirds are migrating back to Ohio from Mexico and Central America, with sightings reported on March 31 in Cincinnati and on April 9 in Grove City (these are ruby-throated hummingbirds, the common species in our state). Their journey will continue, and an interactive map helps local residents track their progress as the birds are expected statewide by the end of April (the tool has tracked sightings for more than a decade).  The Daily Record

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wayne County has released its list of road projects scheduled for 2025—these projects are planned to improve local roads and safety. Officials will provide updates as the projects progress.  The Daily Record
  • Wayne County announced a busy road construction season for 2025 with major projects including a roundabout at the Smithville Western — Honeytown roads intersection beginning early June with a 75-day closure, a bridge replacement on Reedsburg Road also starting early June, and road resurfacing on Pleasant Home and West Salem roads scheduled for late summer. County crews will later perform full-depth reclamation on select roads and replace seven local bridges as time and weather permit.  The Daily Record

HEALTH NEWS

  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture warned that some frozen soups and bowls with cilantro from brands such as Campbell’s, Molly’s, Healthy Request, and Craft might have wood contamination—shoppers in Ohio and three other states should throw away or return the items if they have them.  The Daily Record
  • The Wayne County Health Department lost $200,000 in federal funding and has instituted a hiring freeze while delaying upgrades to maintain its essential services. The department is working with local hospitals & agencies to prepare for a potential measles outbreak and urges residents to keep vaccinations up to date.  The Daily Record
  • The FDA recalled Texas Pete Habanero Buffalo Sauce from T.W. Garner Food Company after tests found hidden sulfites that can cause a bad reaction—Ohio is one of 10 states affected. Bottles in 12-ounce or 2-ounce sizes with best-by dates of November 7 or December 5 sold from February 5 to March 26 may be returned for a refund or thrown away.  The Daily Record

SPORTS NEWS

  • Shane Coblentz is a key pitcher for the Waynedale Golden Bears, posting a 4-0 record and a 0.41 ERA while striking out 13 in a recent shutout—his strong play gives the team hope for another state title run. Coach Lucas Daugherty said Coblentz sets the tone on the mound and teammates trust him to lead during important games.  The Daily Record
