COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Salvation Army Orrville-Maiwurm Service Center will host the 29th annual Bob 'Punch' Maiwurm Memorial Golf Scramble on May 17 at Riceland Golf Course with check-in from 7 a.m. until 7:45 a.m., an 8 a.m. shotgun start, and a registration fee of $75 per person or $300 for a team of four; prizes include a $400 cash award for first place, $200 for runners-up, a free round for third place, and a raffle drawing for a $400 gift certificate. The event — which honors Bob Maiwurm who founded the local Salvation Army in 1939 — welcomes both amateur and experienced players.  The Daily Record

CULTURE NEWS

  • This week, residents will have five events to enjoy—Lehman's hosts a picnic-themed tour and snacks on Wednesday, the Holy Lederhosen Food Truck serves bratwursts at JAFB in Wooster on Wednesday, 'Giselle' is performed at the Holmes Center for the Arts on Friday and Sunday, Word of Mouth BBQ holds a fish fry on Friday, and comedian Jeff Allen performs at the Ohio Star Theater on Saturday.   • The Wooster Music Club met on April 2 at Wesley Hall at the United Methodist Church with co-presidents Kathy Helmuth and Louie Miller welcoming members and guests. The meeting featured a quartet with Annie Gerig on oboe, Kathy Helmuth on flute, Marty Starkey on clarinet and Myra Leeper on piano, and guest performances honored composer Victor Young and presented an original song by Meg Litteral.  The Daily Record

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Melinda Hill, an OSU Extension educator from Wayne County, announced she will retire after 37 years—ending her long career—and plan to travel, work in her garden, and care for her parents. She said others should plan early for retirement—saving money and finding hobbies that make the change easier.  The Daily Record

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Wayne County Health Department, in partnership with the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, will host a drive-through food pantry Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 244 W. South St. in Wooster for families earning at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level (for example, an individual earning $30,120 or less) and is seeking volunteers who can help one hour before and half an hour after the event.  The Daily Record
